The purpose of the 87th Cleveland Pipe Band is to preserve and perpetuate the Scottish and Irish Heritage through the performance of modern and traditional pipe band music. For the 87th Cleveland Pipe Band, several values sum up the scope of what we are as an organization. We operate and continue to grow as we strive to uphold the values that are important to us. They define us, and continually give us the focus and perspective we need to flourish. These are our values: Teamwork - Together Everyone Achieves More. Success is not achieved without each member doing his or her part; it is achieved through the collaboration of each individual helping the organization reach common short-term and long-term goals. Leadership - Though the organization elects and appoints several "official" members to fulfill leadership roles, each member strives to lead by example. We as an organization hope to stand out as leaders in the community. Commitment - Each member of this organization is committed to the organization. This includes the dedication to the common goals of the group, as well as a commitment to personal advancement for the common good. Family - This band was founded as a "family" band, and continues to operate as such. Though the number of members has grown far outside the family lines, we continue to operate in the same way, treating those within as members of the "band family". Unity - When we perform and compete, we do so as one band. Though there is a vast array of ages and ability levels in the organization, we work as one collective band. In helping each other to succeed, the entire organization succeeds. Achievement - We set challenging but attainable short-term and long-term goals that help us to improve, both as individuals and as a collective band. Though success is often determined by competition results, we struggle to keep a proper perspective on our accomplishments both on and off the field. We realize that through challenging our own "comfort levels" we succeed as individuals and as an organization. Ethics - In all that we do, we endeavor to "Uphold the Right". We seek success only by ethical means, and make every effort to do what is just and moral. Musicianship - Through the performance and competition of modern and traditional pipe band music, we seek to develop as individual musicians and as a collective musical ensemble. We constantly push our fellow bandmates and ourselves beyond our "comfort levels". In competition and performance, we strive for musicianship, unity, harmony and musical excellence. Professionalism - In all that we do, we strive to be professional. We recognize that the actions of each and every member reflect the values of the organization, as well as the importance of professionalism and class both on and off the field. Volunteerism - Each member of the organization volunteers his or her time and talents. No one gets paid for services to the band. Many devote countless hours, despite family and professional duties. Without the tireless efforts of every volunteer within the organization, we would not be able to continue operation. Education - As we teach, we learn. We realize the need for continual education at all levels. We seek to perpetuate the art form through the enrollment and education of new individuals, both young and old. Heritage - Through performance and competition, we seek to preserve the Scottish and Irish heritage. We also take great pride in being an American pipe band organization in this global idiom. While we are proud of our achievements in the competition of modern pipe band music, we recognize our need to respect the nature and source of this art form. Pride - Members have tremendous pride in all the organization has accomplished, and are proud to be a part of the 87th Cleveland Pipe Band. Although we are proud of our success, we strive to be humble and modest and recognize the need for continued teamwork and effort. Passion - Our members are passionate about their instruments and passionate about the attainment of common goals. Our instructors are passionate about education; our leaders share a passion for guiding. Enjoyment - We recognize the need to have fun. Though we work hard, we also play hard. We as an organization try to maintain a fun atmosphere. Though we are serious about attaining our goals, we enjoy ourselves along the way. We also take great enjoyment in achieving our goals. Additionally, we enjoy both playing our instruments and performing and the familial fellowship of our bandmates both on and off the field. "You don't 'work' the bagpipes, you 'play' the bagpipes." |
